WORSHIP THOUGHTS
07/08/06 - “The harp music will quiet you, and you will soon be well again.”
This scripture reference is taken from the last part of verse 16 in 1 Samuel Chapter 16. (New Living Translation) It refers to the instance when King Saul was troubled by a tormenting spirit, and his servants suggested a remedy (v15-16). “Let us find a good musician to play the harp for you whenever the tormenting spirit is bothering you.”
Firstly, as we look at these verses we see that the Spirit of the Lord had left Saul. This was a major problem for Saul. God sent a tormenting spirit and he was filled with depression and fear. For us today, we cannot do without the Spirit of God in our lives. In John 14v26 we read that the Father sends the Counsellor – the Holy Spirit - as Jesus’ representative. He will teach you everything and will remind you of everything Jesus has told us. In our lives we need more than ever before the Spirit of God, Jesus’ representative to teach us and guide into all truth John 16 v 13).
Back to 1 Samuel. David, a young boy who had just been anointed by Samuel, had been serving his father faithfully as a shepherd, and he was known as a harp player. He must have been good! You don’t get known if you are musically ordinary! Saul’s servants must have heard about him as they suggested that he come and play for Saul. And then they spoke these prophetic words, “The harp music will quiet you, and you will soon be well again.”
When was the last time you heard music that soothed you? It is probably a very long time ago for many of us, if at all. For me, there are many classical compositions that sooth me. Pieces where melodies that are magnificent and majestic, yet pure and poignant float through the air and create special moments. If you have never listened to classical music you have missed out.
David began to play and God used the melody and the heart in the music to bring relief to Saul. He needed it and God did it, by using a young boy who was devoted as a worshipper.
As worshippers who adore God, is it possible for us to tap into heaven and create melodies that bring peace? I believe it is possible as we yield our lives to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. He will teach us what to play, what to sing and in so doing, will bring glory to the Father, through Jesus.
