THE ART OF SONGWRITING
The song must consolidate what God is saying.
Songwriters
Unless we remain true to what God is saying to us, we will be teaching the church to sing error. The better alternative is to remain true at every level to what God is speaking. We need our songwriters in the local churches of every city penning what the leaders of the church are preaching about. This way the people not only get the Word through t he message, but through the songs that are being sung. Historically, this is how the Wesley brothers operated. One would preach and one would write. The theology of the Word was being sung in congregations all over the nation and understanding of the Word came. Revelation was breaking upon the church as they sang the realities of God’s Word.
Surely, in the church today, we need the same to happen. We want revelation and understanding breaking into our gatherings. We desire that people of every age gain an insight into the mysteries of God. Therefore we need our songwriters to start penning what is being preached. Asking the elders and pastors to help you in your usage of words and always staying true to the Bible.
Vulnerability
Every songwriter must allow his or her lyrics and melodies to come under the scrutiny of those who are carrying responsibility towards them. Pastors and elders carry a vital role in the life of a songwriter. They carry the God given responsibility for our lives and in so doing can help us to hone our craft. Each songwriter must be part of a local church and therefore be able to carry the heart of the leaders hip as they write and pen what God is saying. I believe that songwriters should meet with pastors and elders from time to time to find out themes that are going to be preached on, or burdens that the leadership are carrying. I will go a little further in saying that I believe that our leaders should be writing themselves.
Let’s be those people who allow our gifts to be shaped and crafted as we work with those who carry oversight to our lives. I believe that this will spurn a complete new generation of songwriters who are penning Biblical song and consolidating what God is saying.
