HEART OF THE MATTER
Someone who is trained
As those involved in Church life we need to be constantly stretched and pulled out of any comfort zone we might slip into. We need training not only in our musical gift, but also in the things of God. Musical challenges are not enough. We need saturating in the word of God in order to keep focused in our calling and pressing into the purpose of God. Training is the mechanics that enables us to perform more skillfully. Development of this kind is impossible without a teacher. Luke 6:40 states " A student is not above his teach er, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher." The emphasis here is on being fully trained. Training cannot be relegated to an occasional event. It is important to understand that training has to be continuous for us to develop as musicians and worshippers. This can happen through Bible study and gifted ministries, but is primarily the job of the great teacher, the Holy Spirit. When searching for a teacher remember their role in your life is to point out your weaknesses and help you develop and strengthen those areas to overcome those problems.
Then, the work of practicing begins. The aim of practice is not to enable you to play the piece correctly but so that you would not be able to play it incorrectly. I am consistently aiming towards a higher level of excellence to honor God. Search out a teacher who will inspire you to do the same not only as a musician but in the things of God as well. Every member of every team should be being trained by someone.
